The Finale: Three Day Quote Challenge

Thank you to Curly Girl Abroad for nominating me for the Three Day Quote Challenge! Y’all should check out her travel blog. Her photos are amazing and she has great travel tips!

Rules for the Quote Challenge

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link to their blog post.
  2. Post 1-3 quotes a day for 3 consecutive days.
  3. Nominate 3 bloggers each day.

Today’s quote comes from the hilarious and still relevant, Mark Twain.

Quote #1

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” -Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad

I saved the best for last. This is my absolute favorite quote. When I first read this quote I was struck by how true it is. I have been lucky to have traveled to and lived in many places. Reading about a place in the news or in a history book only reveals a small sliver into reality. When you physically go someplace and experience the sights, smells, and sounds you can only then begin to gray out your understanding where before you may have understood things to be black and white. It is easy to write people off when you haven’t come face to face with them. Travel replaces ignorance with understanding.

And, I recognize that traveling is a privilege that many people do not have the time or money for it. However, I also interpret this quote to be figurative. This quote is about traveling outside of your own interests, community, and culture. You can travel through books, by meeting new people, and watching movies that you normally wouldn’t. Don’t go to your usual restaurant for date night, but pick a new place instead with dishes whose names you can’t pronounce. You’ll come away with an understanding of something new.

Today I would like to nominate:

  1. Adam, Two Second Street
  2. Louise, Captured to Share
  3. Evelina

You don’t have to participate, but I hope you will accept the challenge. Let me know in the comments if you do because I would love to check out your quotes! Thanks for reading along these past three days! What do you think of Mark Twain’s quote?
