[Note: I missed yesterday’s deadline and I’ll be double posting today to make up for it. Thanks for continuing to read my stories!]
Welcome to the 2017 Blogging A-to-Z Challenge! I’ll be blogging my way through the alphabet the entire month of April, taking a break on Sundays, for a total of 26 posts! This year I am writing short stories based on a word that starts with the letter of the alphabet. The 26 fictional stories are not related to one another. This is a chance for me to exercise my imagination and explore creative writing which I have not done since college. Learn more about the blogging challenge HERE!
The theme for today’s story is Nightmare.
The moon was hidden behind thick clouds and the night was pitch black which made it difficult to see but easy to hide. A dangerous game of hide and seek was happening in the woods tonight and the odds were stacked against the hider. You see, the seeker was a hideous and hungry monster and the hider, well, the hider did not know they were a part of the game.
The hider’s running was forced to a slow struggling crawl when he get stuck in a muddy swamp. The growling and panting gained on him now and his pulse quickened as he began to panic. The mud seemed to be alive as it clung to his legs and held them too thick for him to pass through. Think. Look around. Is there somewhere to hide? A tree limb hung over the swamp and it was low enough to grab onto. The adrenaline provided him enough strength to pull his whole body up and out of the muddy swamp and onto the tree. Height gave him an advantage and he quickly and quietly climbed higher hoping his scent would be elevated and dispersed with the wind.
Suddenly, the forest was quiet. The wind died down, the leaves lay still, and the animals seemed to have disappeared. A noxious scent was coming from the swamp and it began to bubble. Moments later it exploded like a geyser and the force caused him to lose his balance and fall out of the tree. A few tree limbs broke his fall but he still hit the ground hard and his breath was knocked out of him. The monster must have heard him fall because the sniffing began.
Hurry. It’s coming closer. Soon it will be able to sniff you out and then….
A moment later he woke up in a cold sweat. Everything was quiet. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and breathed a sigh of relief. It had been a terrible dream and nothing more. But in the darkness he heard panting other than his own. He felt a gust of wind and a moment later something a muscled arm hit him in the head knocking him out. He was living in a nightmare.
And with this post that makes fourteen down and 12 more to go! Thank you for reading my short story. What did you think? If you are here with the Blogging A-to-Z Challenge, please leave a comment below because I would love to check out your posts!
